HERO?
I was recently contacted by a woman in San Miguel who follows me; knows my story, wanted to meet, and share something.
She said she admired me, my coming out and how I was handling my journey. With that, she wanted to trust me with a private story she had never told anyone.
She had suspected her mother was lesbian. There was photographs showing her past, periods of true happiness. But her mother was forced to lead a miserable life as a wife and mother; and knew she would have been happier as her true self.
Her mother went to her grave – at 89 – hiding her secret.
She said I was her hero for being an example of how to be. Authentic.
She wished that for her mother.
This woman was finally at peace having told me her story. It wasn’t a secret anymore.
I was overwhelmed by her gesture, her courage, and honored to be trusted with her story.
We are both better for it. Hero? I don’t know about that. But we are now friends. Connected by the generations.

As you well know, being true to oneself comes with battles. Those battles you have taken on and haven’t backed down
It boggles my mind to imagine how many people lived lives where they hid themselves the people who mattered most to them. It saddens me to think about it, but there is redemption and there is acceptance in hearing such a beautiful story as this one. So good of her to reach out to you and share. Thank you for sharing with all of us.
